Oyster Bay, NY – A collision between a Nissan Altima and Jeep Cherokee in Long Island, NY resulted in the death of three men on Sunday, May 30, 2010, as reported by The Journal News.
At approximately 10:45 p.m. Jose Moldonado, 23, drove past a parked officer in Oyster Bay. The cruiser pulled onto the road in attempts to pull the car over for speeding. Police reported they do not believe this action led to the chase, as the officer lost sight of the vehicle at times.
The Altima was clocked at 76 mph, according to Nassau County Det. Lt. Kevin Smith, when he came up on a curve and crossed into the southbound lane. The Altima then crashed into the Cherokee, killing the Jeep driver instantly.
Moldonado and his 17-year-old passenger died at the scene. Smith reported Moldonado was not licensed to drive in New York.
Smith added, “We have witnesses who were between the officer and the car who said the car was absolutely flying.”
It was unclear if the driver knew the officer who was in pursuit, or whether alcohol was a factor. The name of the officer involved was not released. He is a member of the Old Brookville Police Department.
