Salinas, CA – On Thursday, May 27, 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration announced that organicgirl Produce is voluntarily recalling cases of 10-ounce organicgirl Baby Spinach with an expired Use-by Date of May 22 and product code 11A061167. The packages have the potential of Salmonella contamination.

The recall consists of 336 cases of organicgirl Baby Spinach packages. The spinach was available in Alabama, North Carolina, Oregon, Wisconsin, Arizona and California. There are no other organicgirl products included in the recall.

The recall was issued after a third-party laboratory test confirmed a positive Salmonella contamination in a single package of organicgirl Baby Spinach. No illnesses were reported in association with the recall.

Salmonella can cause fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and possibly bloody diarrhea in healthy people. It can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in individuals with weakened or compromised immune systems, such as the young or elderly. If consumers experience these ailments, they should contact a doctor.

Even though it is unexpected the past-date products still remain on store shelves, the precautionary recall action is being conducted to reach retailers and consumers. The recall aims to alert consumers who may still have the product at home to immediately discard the product.

Upon receiving notification of the Salmonella test result, organicgirl Produce conducted a traceability analysis and an evaluation of its food safety documentation. All proved to be in compliance.

Consumers in the states affected by the recall are advised to check their refrigerators for the 10 oz. package size of organicgirl Baby Spinach with a Use-by Date of May 22 and Product Code 11A061167.

Retailers are asked to check their inventories as well in order to confirm the 10-ounce packages are not available to consumers.

Customer service representatives from organicgirl Produce have contacted retailers to notify them of the issue.
