St. Mary’s County, MD – A bike race over the weekend of May 15, 2010, resulted in a criminal investigation after police and racers concluded someone may have purposefully thrown tacks onto the road, as reported by wbaltv.com.
Authorities reported the tacks resulted in multiple crashes in several different races.
One cyclist’s helmet camera caught images of riders in a sudden pile up in front of him. The first bike to crash had a blown tire, causing damage to both cyclists and bicycles.
One of the injured cyclists, Bryan Vaughan, told reporters his feelings; “The first reaction is to feel a little like you’ve been assaulted. You know, angry. That one crash caused probably several thousand dollars (in damage) a bike and multiple injuries and, frankly, can be a lot worse. So, somebody who’s doing something like that during a race is really taking the chance of potentially killing someone.”
The most serious injury resulting from the crash was a broken bone, Vaughan reported. Vaughan himself suffered a large wound on his leg.
Police at St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident. Anyone with information on who may be responsible for the tacks is asked to call the office.
