New York, NY – The trial of a New York Police Department narcotics detective accused of violating the civil rights of at least three women through forced sexual conduct began Tuesday, May 18, 2010, as reported by USA Today. The officer pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The prosecutors claim Oscar Sandino, a 13-year veteran to the force, forced a woman to have sex with him in a police station bathroom by threatening to arrest her, and that this kind of behavior continued even after he was put on restricted duty and under Internal Affairs Bureau scrutiny.

The original charges began with the February 2008 arrest of a Queens drug suspect. Sandino is accused of ordering the suspect’s girlfriend to take her clothes off. Once the parties arrived at the station, Sandino told the woman that she would go to jail and lose custody of her children if she did not have sex with him.

Court papers state he told her he “would prevent those things from happening if she had sex with him.”

Officer Sandino followed the woman into a precinct restroom where he forced her to perform a sex act. She was released the next day, and later reported the incident to the NYPD. Sandino was immediately pulled off active duty and the department began an internal investigation.

The investigation found that Sandino victimized another woman in 2006. He reportedly told this woman he would help her cousin get out of a long prison sentence if she had sex with him.

The last incident officials are aware of happened in 2009, while Sandino was reassigned to booking suspects in Brooklyn. Sandino reportedly took a woman who had been arrested for disorderly conduct into a back room, where he sexually accosted her.

If convicted, Sandino faces up to three years in prison.
