Detroit, MI – A 7-year-old girl was shot and killed by an officer’s gun during a police raid on a home that was housing a murder suspect, as reported by the Free Press. The officer’s gun went off after the officer engaged in physical contact with a woman inside the home.
At approximately 12:40 a.m. Sunday, May 16, 2010, the Detroit Police Department’s Special Response Team set off a flash grenade as they entered the home where a suspect in the slaying of a 17-year-old was presumed to be hiding. The officers entered with guns drawn.
Assistant Chief Ralph Godbee reported the lead officer encountered a 46-year-old woman inside the front room of the home and “some level of physical contact” occurred when the officer’s gun discharged. The gun struck Aiyana Jones in the neck. She was transported to the hospital, but later died.
Head of the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutatlity, Ron Scott, labeled Sunday’s shooting the worst he has seen in his 14 years of working to end police abuse.
Godbee reported an investigation was already underway, and said, “We cannot undo what occurred this morning… All we can do is pledge an open and full investigation and to support Aiyana’s family in whatever way they may be willing to accept from us at this time.”
The suspect was apprehended at the house after the little girl was accidentally shot. Police arrested a 34-year-old man thought to be responsible for the shooting death of Southeastern High School student, Jarean Blake. Blake was brutally gunned down in front of his girlfriend Friday, May 14, 2010,
The suspect was engaged to the 7-year-old girl’s aunt. While the aunt did not live in the same place as the girl, she and her fiancé were found there after police investigations found a car that matched vehicle descriptions from the Friday shooting scene.
