Boston, MA– A 15-foot recreational boat sank in Plymouth Harbor Tuesday, May11, 2010, leaving a 19-year-old man dead and another recovering, as reported by The Boston Globe.

The Coast Guard received a mayday call at approximately 11:30 p.m., Tuesday night and began the search for the two men. They found the boat’s owner, 20-year-old Wayne Carlson, clinging to a buoy at approximately 2 a.m., after a worried friend told Plymouth Harbor officials about the men’s projected route.

A Jayhawk helicopter found Carlson’s close friend David Hanson floating unconscious in the water at approximately 3 a.m., and directed Coast Guard officials to his location. He was taken to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, where he was pronounced dead.

The two men left Kingston Harbor Tuesday evening when the boat began taking on water at approximately 11:22 p.m. They were approximately 2 miles east of their destination. Both men were wearing life vests.

Hanson was readying to graduate from Massasoist Community College and had plans to become a Kingston firefighter. He was an ambulance driver and security guard at the Hanover mall. He recently returned from a relief mission in Haiti with his church. He was an Eagle Scout.

Hanson’s father, Keith, told reporters his family is mourning the death and that, “They shouldn’t have been out there in that boat…It was lack of judgement and two inexperienced guys who shouldn’t have been out there. It’s like playing Russian roulette.”

Carlson reported the two had not been drinking or doing anything illegal, and acknowledged they should not have taken the boat out at dark.

The Harbormaster and Plymouth police are investigating the incident.
