Ban on bisphenol A (BPA) containing baby bottles in Canada

Bisphenol A or BPA is one of the ingredients used to make baby bottles and other household items including eyeglass lenses, linings of food cans, etc according to a report issued by the Associated Press on Saturday.

Canada is one of the first countries to ban bisphenol from baby bottles. This action has been taken six months after BPA was declared dangerous by the health ministry. The earlier findings stated that BPA, which is a substance, used for hardening of the plastic to make containers strong and sturdy, is harmful to the environment and people, especially infants and new borns. It is predominantly used in making bottles for infants say the Associated Press.

The US Food and Drug Administration or the FDA and European Union at present say this chemical is safe. FDA is however awaiting reports from a scientific panel researching the risk assessment independently.

One of the largest trade group which represents manufacturers of food products including beverage, the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association said Canada’s reaction to the presence of BPA in infant bottles was exaggerated and did not correspond to the risk factor put forth by various public health agencies according to a report issued by the Associated Press.

Those who support the ban however claim that this chemical is present in at least 90 percent of Americans. They also claim that Bisphenol A or BPA has been found to cause heart diseases, problems related to hormones and reproduction, hyperactivity in animals kept in labs under study, obesity or even cancer according to studies conducted earlier.
