Reports say the number of traffic accident fatalities has increased sharply in the first half of 2015.

During the first six months of this year, a sharp increase was seen in the number of traffic accident fatalities nationwide, according to reports. Data gathered by The National Safety Council shows that approximately 19,000 people were killed in traffic crashes through June. The trend suggests that traffic deaths may surpass 40,000 by the end of the year, exceeding 2007’s record total of 44,000, according to Deborah A.P. Hersman, president of the council.

“All told, nearly 19,000 people across the country lost their lives in traffic accidents through June, and the tally doesn’t include two of the historically highest months for traffic deaths, July and August, said the council, a nonprofit organization created by Congress to promote safety…The increases began in the last quarter of 2014 and have been recorded consistently through each month of this year, Hersman said.”

Hersman says of the data, “As a safety professional, it’s not just disappointing but heartbreaking to see the numbers trending in the wrong direction.”

Others like New York based personal injury lawyer Jonathan C. Reiter agree. Says the attorney, who represents victims in catastrophic injury cases, “the saddest part about seeing these kinds of statistics is knowing that a significant percentage of the mass number of deaths involve innocent victims who were killed by someone else’s negligence.”

A 23 percent increase in New York City traffic fatalities was also reported in 2012, in accordance with data from the Mayor’s Management Report.

“According to new data produced by the Mayor’s Management Report, traffic fatalities in New York City have risen 23 percent over the course of roughly one year from July 2011 to June 2012 — the first increase recorded since 2007.”

Subsequent to the report, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the start of a project designed to reduce the number of traffic accidents in the city. As stated on the website for the Vision Zero initiative “…today in New York, approximately 4,000 New Yorkers are seriously injured and more than 250 are killed each year in traffic crashes. Being struck by a vehicle is the leading cause of injury-related death for children under 14, and the second leading cause for seniors. On average, vehicles seriously injure or kill a New Yorker every two hours.”

The action plan includes multiple measures to improve road safety throughout the city. Transportation safety advocates have expressed hope that the initiative will help reduce traffic injuries and deaths quickly. Other areas across the country have also adopted similar measures.

Manhattan personal injury lawyer Jonathan C. Reiter  says that holding those who drive negligently accountable for any financial damages their actions impose on others is another important weapon in the fight to make the nation’s roads safer to travel. Says the New York lawyer “civil actions brought forth by injured victims have been helpful for deterring negligent drivers from repeating actions that pose serious risks to others on the road like driving while under the influence, speeding, or texting while driving.”
