Philadelphia – An Amtrak train bound for New York when it drailed in Philadephia on May 12 was going twice the speed limit prior to the accident reports say. According to Bloomberg, U.S. regulators have determined that the train was traveling at 106 miles per hour, while the speed limit is 50 mph in the area where the wreck took place.

Robert Sumwalt with the National Transportation Safety Board stated at a news conference that the engineer of the train applied full brakes before the derailment, which slowed the train to 102 mph.

Sumwalt further stated that the incident may have been prevented if automatic braking technology utilized on the rail line in other locations had been in place. The agency determined the speed based on preliminary data, and said the investigation is ongoing.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter told CNN that the train’s engineer had been “reckless and irresponsible in his actions” stating “There’s really no excuse that could be offered, literally unless he had a heart attack. And he went to the hospital and we interviewed him and he was released. So that doesn’t appear to be one of the reasons.”
