Karin Cook, the chief operating officer at HSBC Private Bank, has advised a group of around 30 women on how to make it in the technology sector.

In November, Karin joined with leading IT recruitment agency Nicoll Curtin at the firm’s Women Leaders in Banking Technology event to address a group of senior professionals, and offer advice on how to make it to the top as a woman in what remains largely a man’s world.

Industry figures show that while women make up almost half of Britain’s labour force, they account for just 16 per cent of professionals working within the IT and telecoms sector.

Karin offered some sage advice, telling those gathered to speak up about their achievements and make sure they don’t go unrecognised. She urged women to try and think strategically about their career, consider what’s next, and to never back away from applying for a promotion they feel is beyond their current capabilities.

“The fact is that some of your male colleagues are likely to apply for the same role, while women only put themselves forward if they feel they’re perfect for that job,” she said. “The worst that will happen is that you don’t get the job, but you have to believe in and push yourself.”

Jo Wilcox, the Marketing Manager at Nicoll Curtin, said: “We were delighted to have Karin Cook at our Women Leaders in Banking Technology event last month. Her talk was extremely inspirational and hopefully by sharing her experiences of making it to the top, other women can draw on her wisdom and insight.

“When it comes to IT recruitment in London and cities around the world it is of course important to find the person with the most suitable skills. Our aim with this event was to bring senior business women together in one place and allow them to share their own experiences of working within the sector. It is these kinds of networking opportunities that can really make the difference and allow women to see their own roles within a business in a different light.”

Nicoll Curtin is one of the world’s most successful IT recruitment companies, helping professionals to find IT jobs in London and Singapore though its bases in those cities. The company also has offices in Switzerland from where its dedicated team source Zurich IT jobs at businesses in one of the wold’s major financial centres.
