The suits would be called “group actions,” and used to pursue civil rights class action cases, says San Francisco employment lawyer Eric Grover. Our civil rights are the fundamental building blocks that our country was built on and should be protected. Civil rights continue to be an issue in our country and there should be an avenue to prosecute class action claims in a court of law, notes Grover. Just as in other class actions, the message and power is found in numbers—not individual cases.

Sen. Al Franken introduced a bill Wednesday meant to undo a Supreme Court ruling he says limits the right of workers to pursue class action lawsuits. The bill would create a new class of lawsuit called “group action,” in response to a 2011 Supreme Court decision that held a group of women could not pursue a class action lawsuit against Wal-Mart for gender discrimination.
