The VW Beetle was last available as a convertible for the 2010 model year, but Volkswagen has announced that the wait for a new open-air model will soon be over. Taking on the sportier styling and responsive drivetrains of the redesigned 21st Century Beetle, the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is expected to arrive before the end of the year and should be the automaker’s most engaging Beetle drop-top yet.
Like its hard-topped sibling, the 2013 Beetle Convertible will offer a choice of three engines, including a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter, a turbocharged 2.0-liter and a 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel unit that returns up to 41 mpg on the highway with the manual transmission. Though more details are expected closer to the launch date, Volkswagen has told Carscoop.com that the Beetle Convertible will feature a fast-acting top designed to maintain the sleek lines of the coupe model.
“The 21st Century Beetle has a much more athletic look than past generations, and that design is really well suited for a convertible,” said Frank Carnucci, general manager of Manchester, New Hampshire VW dealer Quirk Volkswagen. “What’ll make the 2013 Beetle Convertible the most fun though are its new engines, which will allow the car to smoothly zoom around back roads on less fuel.”
Buyers that are instead leaning toward the Beetle coupe will also be able to get added fuel efficiency when the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDI goes on sale in August. Using the aforementioned 2.0-liter TDI engine, the new clean-diesel Beetle will also be capable of returning up to 41 mpg on the highway, all while outputting 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque.
For those that prefer electricity over diesel fuel when it comes to saving at the pump, Volkswagen will be releasing its first hybrid compact, the 2013 Jetta Hybrid, in late fall. Mating a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor and a 220-volt battery pack, the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid will produce a total of 177 horsepower and return a manufacturer-estimated 45 mpg combined in city and highway driving.
Regardless of the drivetrain, the Jetta lineup is receiving a series of trim improvements for the 2013 model year. The Jetta’s SE trim level and above will now feature standard power-recline driver and front passenger seats, while all SEL trims will include a soft-touch dash. Driving enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the 2013 Jetta GLI now features Launch Control when equipped with the DSG automatic transmission, allowing for ideal take-offs from a standstill.
“The Jetta was just redesigned for the 2011 model year, so Volkswagen didn’t have to add many changes, but it continues to make tweaks to cater to customers’ needs,” added Carnucci. “Buyers can not only choose from a variety of trims, but they can find a range of efficient drivetrains in gas, diesel, and soon, hybrid models.”
