A college education is an investment in the future, but it is also an expensive cost to parents and students. According to Collegedata.com, the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2011-2012 school year was $28,500 at private colleges, $8,244 for state residents at public colleges, and $20,770 for out of state residents attending public universities. That number is bound to increase in the future due to interest rates and inflation. Family Life Credit Services offers a free online calculator to help parents and students put together a savings plan for higher education.

The cost calculator, which can be found on the Family Life Credit Services website, is very simple to use. Parents and students fill in the blanks to simple questions. The calculator generates total cost and the monthly savings amount to reach the goal. Some of the questions include today’s yearly tuition, years of college, amount you have saved currently, expected interest rate, and expected inflation rate.

After filling in the information, the tool will generate a suggested savings schedule. The schedule includes the amounts of deposits and withdrawals. It also puts together an estimated amount of interest that will be accrued over the savings period.

Saving for a college education can seem overwhelming, but Family Life Credit Services is here to help. The cost calculator can be found at Family Life Credit Services’ website. If you have questions about planning to save, please feel free to contact the credit counselors at FLCS. Their expertise and advice will help you provide for your children’s future.
