Last week, news of an Israeli law banning skinny models from local ad campaigns made waves in America by suggesting the use of unnaturally thin models sends an unhealthy message about body image. More recently, controversy continues to grow over a Vogue article that spotlights mother Dara-Lynn Weiss discussing a long, and questionable, quest to keep her 7-year-old daughter on a diet.
On the authors’ blog, 365 Days Of Shut Up, which guides people toward accepting their bodies and illuminates the unhealthy aspects of dieting, Greg Archer calls the Israeli law “a bold and dynamic move; a delicious attempt by a government to directly combat the fashion industry, which has for years been rightly accused of fueling eating disorders and body image disorders through the photographs and images it sends into the mainstream.”
Regarding Dara-Lynn Weiss … the Vogue article reports she became obsessed with her 7- year-old daughter, Bea’s, weight and eating after a visit to their pediatrician, and placed her daughter on a severe dieting regimen for an extended time. Dr. Rago notes this is “a great example of how unhelpful it is for pediatricians to label children obese without providing guidance or telling parents how to handle it. Weiss, who clearly has her own untreated eating and weight issues, has transferred her own obsessions and insecurities onto her helpless child.”
‘Shut Up, Skinny Bitches,’ released in 2011, tackles a number of issues rising to the forefront in the media: body image, eating disorders, dieting, and learning to accept one’s body. The health book also steers readers away from chronic dieting. The authors point out why dieting doesn’t work and how starving ourselves is a direct response to unhealthy images spawned by the advertising and media industries, and by the diet books such as the Skinny Bitch series.
