Shaw Industries One of First to Be Certified by Newly Managed Cradle to Cradle

Flooring Company Recognized for Its EcoWorx Carpet Products, Sustainable Practices

03/15/2012 // Burlington, MA, USA // CambridgePRGroup // A.J. Rose Carpets & Flooring

When it comes to evolving in the name of environmental responsibility, flooring manufacturer Shaw Industries is ahead of the game, according to the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. The not-for-profit organization recently awarded the EcoWorx group of carpet products available at Shaw carpet dealers with a Cradle to Cradle Silver certification, recognizing its eco-friendly production and Shaw’s overall commitment to sustainable business practices.

The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute recently took over management of the Cradle to Cradle Certified program, which was created in 2005 to comprehensively evaluate the environmental responsibility of manufacturers and the sustainability of their products. The Institute now operates and audits the certification process, working with academic and industry leaders, the government and the NGO environmental community to turn Cradle to Cradle into a trusted and complete rating system.

“Shaw was the first flooring company to bring fully certified Cradle to Cradle products to market when the program started, and they’ve since become an authority on eco-friendly manufacturing,” said Barry Greenberg, sales manager of Greater Boston carpet dealer A.J. Rose Carpets & Flooring. “Even under the new management for Cradle to Cradle, Shaw has some of the first products of any kind in the world to receive certification. That shows that the use of sustainable practices and materials are deeply linked to their long-term business strategy.”

Five categories are considered when the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute first evaluates a product or business: Material Health, Material Reutilization, Renewable Energy Use, Water Stewardship and Social Responsibility. When combined, the criteria ensure that manufacturing materials are safe and often reusable, and that they are manipulated through sustainable production processes.

To earn Cradle to Cradle Silver certification, Shaw Industries’ EcoWorx products were rated as having no PVC, chloroprene or related toxic chemicals at any concentration. Shaw also met requirements for instituting companywide water stewardship guidelines, assessing all materials for toxicity to human and environmental health and developing a strategy for including renewable energy.

Cradle to Cradle is not the only program that recently recognized Shaw Industries for its commitment to sustainability. Last December, Shaw’s Plant 95 manufacturing facility in Dalton, Georgia earned a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the United States Green Building Council. Eco-friendly manufacturing processes and building operations helped the plant earn its certification, with techniques including energy-efficient lighting, water-efficient landscaping and sizeable recycling efforts.

“Shaw’s recent environmental accolades have been impressive, but what really stands out is how they have managed to create attractive and long-lasting products while meeting those standards,” added Greenberg. “They are leading the industry by example, and other flooring companies are starting to follow suit with sustainability efforts of their own.”
