Porsche Puts More Performance into Its Panamera

New GTS Model of Sports Sedan Offers Track-Worthy Capability

Not one to skimp on creating new trim levels for its vehicles, Porsche has created a ninth variation of the Panamera luxury sports sedan, dubbed the Panamera GTS. Coming to Porsche dealerships this spring, the performance-oriented 2013 Panamera GTS uses revised suspension settings and engine upgrades to provide 911-like performance in a four-door package.

Porsche took the Panamera 4S and put it on steroids, using revised camshaft profiles and a new air intake to boost power from 400 to 430 horsepower for the GTS model. That additional power, along with revised tuning of the seven-speed PDK transmission, allows sprints to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, a half-second improvement over the Porsche Panamera 4S.

“There are no slow Porsches, but the GTS badge denotes a vehicle of especially heightened performance,” said Larry Bedell, general manager of New Hampshire Porsche dealer Porsche of Nashua. “For those looking for a similar driving experience to the Porsche 911, but with more room, the Panamera GTS is a perfect solution. There won’t be a more exciting back seat on the market than in the GTS.”

Though the Panamera GTS’ engine will grab most of the headlines, Porsche engineers ensured that the sports sedan handles as well as it accelerates. The new Porsche rides on a revised air-suspension system that is both lower and stiffer than the standard Panamera setup, keeping the car planted on the road. GTS models also get the larger brakes from the Panamera Turbo and wider front and rear tracks for greater confidence at autobahn speeds.

U.S. buyers looking to make an adventure out of their Panamera GTS purchase will be able to pick it up in its homeland thanks to the Porsche European Delivery Program. According to Motor Trend magazine, Porsche recently expanded the program so that all of its cars can be picked up in Germany at no extra cost, meaning that grabbing a factory-fresh Panamera in Leipzig is no more expensive than taking delivery in America. That option allows discerning Porsche buyers to take a Bavarian vacation in their own vehicle before Porsche ships it back home.

European Delivery customers get to pick their Porsche up where it was built, meaning Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen in the case of the 911, Boxster and Cayman, and Leipzig for the Panamera and Cayenne utility vehicle. Customers also receive two weeks of auto insurance and a temporary registration that allows them to travel wherever they please, whether to the Nurburgring or Brandenburg Gate.

“There’s nothing like driving a Porsche on the roads where it was developed,” Bedell noted. “Porsche’s European Delivery Program is great way to visit Germany without any of the hassles of renting a vehicle, and you get to drive your own brand-new Porsche. That’s a big upgrade.”
