Napa, CA (San Francisco Child Sex Abuse Attorney News) —A former California state mental hospital director was found guilty of 31 counts of sex crimes committed against his adopted son, which spanned four decades. The guilty verdict was handed down by a Superior Court on Thursday, February 3, 2011, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The defendant, Claude Foulk, 63, was convicted of 31 of 35 counts of sex crimes. Although 11 additional men came forward claiming that Foulk also molested them, because of the statute of limitations, only his son’s case could be prosecuted.

Foulk, who worked at Napa State Hospital before being fired after his arrest last year, adopted two boys and was a foster parent to two boys. One of his adopted sons recalled to jurors how Foulk abused him from age 9 until he was 21-years-old, and how he told him it was “how a man shows love.”

During the week-long trial, the five now-grown men testified against Foulk on how he abused them for years. They remembered how the man they knew as an uncle and foster father would buy them pizza and take them to a mountain cabin, where he would force them to engage in sex acts.

“Foulk used the foster care system to acquire boys to meet his insatiable sexual appetite, knowing they had no parents to turn to… the years of horrific abuse led the boys to turn to alcohol and drugs and have trouble forming lasting relationships,” argued Prosecutor Danette Gomez.

Foulk did take the stand in his own defense, where he denied the allegations against him.

He faces a maximum sentence of up to 248 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on February 23.
