North Carolina Divorce Attorneys Report on Correlation Between Angina and Stressful Relationships

/// 01/10/2011

In an effort to inform feuding couples of the effects of stress from troubled marital and familial relationships, the Raleigh family law attorneys of Gailor, Wallis & Hunt present the findings of a study aimed at examining the correlation between family stress and severe chest pain.

North Carolina divorce lawyers report:

WebMD recently published an article, Family Stress Linked to Angina Pain, which discusses a Danish study’s recent findings on people in stressful relationships and their risk of developing the severe chest pain condition known as angina. According to the study, which was published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, people who reported being in relationships that were worrisome or demanding experienced a threefold increased risk for developing angina, which is a warning sign and symptom of heart disease.

Over 4,500 men and women between the ages of 40 and 60 were followed for a period of six years, from 1999 to 2006. The lead author of the study, Rikke Lund, MD, PhD, an associate professor of social medicine at the Institute of Public Health, University of Copenhagen, in Denmark explained that, based on the correlation between positive social relationships and good health, “We wanted to look at it another way and examine the impact of difficult social relationships on cardiovascular risk.”

The study participants were asked about the quality of their relationships with their partners, children, other relatives, friends and acquaintances, as well as their heart health over the six year trial. Each individual was specifically asked to describe the level of demand, as well as explain the degree of worry and frequency of conflict placed on them by each relationship. The reports state that during the six years, one in 10 individuals developed chest pains associated with angina.

According to the report, those who experienced worrisome and/or demanding relationships with a spouse or partner carried a 3.5-fold increase in angina risk. Those who experienced the same type of relationship with a child experienced a two fold increase in the symptom. Furthermore, the study found that conflict with other family members was much less causal of angina than being in a worrisome or demanding relationship with a partner. Those who reported experiencing frequent arguments with a partner had a 44 percent increase in angina risk. Those who reported stressful relationships among outside friends had little to no associated angina risks.

If your marriage is overly demanding, worrisome and full of conflict, seeking a divorce may be in your best interest and that of any children that may be exposed to the stresses and anxieties associated with unhealthy relationships.
