Oakland, CA (Bay Area Injury Lawyer News)—A California Highway Patrol (CHP) high-speed pursuit took a turn for the worse early Thursday, November 4, 2010, claiming the life of a fleeing motorist, along with that of an innocent driver. The double-fatality motor vehicle collision (MVC), which involved a BMW and Chevrolet Suburban SUV, occurred in East Oakland around 2 a.m. According to information provided by the San Francisco Chronicle, a 7 ½-mile chase was initiated when two on-duty CHP troopers witnessed a BMW speeding in the westbound lanes of Interstate 580, near the 150th Avenue exit in San Leandro.

Reports indicated the two CHP officers saw a westbound BMW traveling at excessive speeds and began to follow the vehicle. Nevertheless, the driver of the BMW, whom family members later identified as 19-year-old Oakland resident Connectis Guiton, sped away. Guiton eventually exited the freeway at the MacArthur Boulevard exit in Oakland, continuing a half-mile north before smashing into the Suburban at the corner of 106th Avenue and MacArthur. Both the Chevrolet and BMW spun out of control and into the parking lot of an auto-body shop on impact. While the SUV reportedly came to a rest on its side, the car erupted in flames after the wreck.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel were subsequently dispatched to the scene of the fiery crash to transport those injured to area hospitals for treatment. Guiton was rushed to Oakland-based Highland Hospital, where his severe injuries eventually proved fatal. The 33-year-old male driver of the Chevrolet sport utility vehicle, whose identity was not released, was killed in the crash as well. He apparently succumbed to his injuries at the accident scene. Guiton’s grandfather, who wished to remain unidentified, alleged his grandson was en route to his job at the Port of Oakland when the crash occurred. “I don’t know why he didn’t stop… I’m upset about everybody that died,” he said. According to CHP Officer Rob Tuazon, “Out of the millions of stops we make each and every year, probably 99.99 percent of everybody does what they’re supposed to do… It’s just unfortunate that these things happen. Nobody ever hopes for those things to happen.” Investigations into the fatal Oakland collision are expected to be underway.
