New York, NY – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Azteca Linda Corp., of Brooklyn, issued a press release on Thursday, July 1, 2010, declaring a recall for Queso Fresco (fresh white cheese) and Queso Herba (fresh white string cheese) with an expiration date of July 7, 2010. The recall is due to a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
The FDA and Azteca Linda Corp. warn Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms among healthy people may include high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea and miscarriages or stillbirths among pregnant women.
The cheeses were distributed within New York State’s Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Bronx and Newburgh, and to Bayonne, New Jersey through retail stores between June 7, 2010 and June 9, 2010.
The Queso Fresco is packaged in a hard plastic container or wrapped in aluminum foil labeled with the brand name Queso El Azteca, UPC 0 23986 92692 8, with an expiration date of July, 2010. The Queso Herba is packaged in a vacuum-sealed plastic bag with net weights of 14 ounces and 5 lbs., and labeled with the brand Queso El Azteca with the expiration date of July 7, 2010.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the products.
The recall comes after an environmental sampling and inspection by the FDA that revealed certain areas within the facility contained the bacteria. The recalls are a precautionary measure.
Consumers who purchased the products are urged to returned it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Questions should be directed to Azteca Linda Corp. at (718) 418-7459, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., EST.
