New York, NY – A motorcycle crash early Tuesday, June 15, 2010, left a New York man dead and a Long Island woman in critical condition, according to reports from NJ.com.
At approximately 4 a.m., Nelson Sotelo, 40, from the Bronx, was thrown from his motorcycle after he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a concrete barrier. The accident happened on McCarter Highway near Chester Avenue, according to Katherine Carter an Essex County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman.
Stoleto was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger on the bike, Cindy Rodriguez, 25, of Baldwin, was transported to University Hospital with a broken back and two fractured legs after the incident.
As of Tuesday evening, Rodriguez was listed in critical but stable condition this evening.
Authorities believe speed was a factor.
Over the past weekend, five people were killed in five separate motorcycle accidents around the New York region, according to a WKBW-TV report.
On Saturday afternoon in Elma, a 29-year-old man was killed after a van failed to yield while turning into a driveway. He was thrown from his bike and died of his injuries.
Late Sunday, a 48-year-old woman was killed after being thrown from the back of the motorcycle she was on. The driver of the bike she was on was charged with DWI and vehicular manslaughter.
Two other riders were killed Saturday after their bikes struck various objects, including a utility pole and sign post.
The fifth fatality happened in East Otto after a man lost control of his bike and struck a ditch. The impact threw the man from the bike.
