North Adams, MA – A North Adams man charged with mutilating and killing five pet rabbits pleaded innocent Monday, June 14, 2010, as reported by Massachusetts Live. The pleas were entered in Northern Berkshire District Court.
Wayne P. Brackett Jr., of East Main Street, faces five felony counts of animal cruelty and five felony counts of killing, maiming or poisoning an animal, among others.
Brackett, 23, told police he did not remember mutilating or killing the rabbits. He reported that he had been drinking heavily and smoking marijuana Tuesday, June 8, the night of the killings. He told authorities he believes he blacked out.
Judge Rita S. Keonigs decided to continue the case until July 7, 2010. She ordered Brackett be held in the Berkshire County House of Correction on $25,000 cash bail.
Police reported that they arrested Brackett on Friday, June 11, after they received a tip from a person who claimed to have recognized him from surveillance video taken at Berkshire County Construction.
According to authorities, the man broke into the company and killed five rabbits that were being raised by the owners’ six-year-old daughter. Nine rabbits were unaccounted for and three survived the attack.
