Baltimore, MD – A two-vehicle collision involving a dirt bike and sedan on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 sent two people to the hospital, as reported by The Baltimore Sun. While one injury was directly related to the collision, the second was due to a beating from the passenger on the dirt bike.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., the driver of a dirt bike ran a red light at the intersection of South Monroe and West Pratt streets and broadsided a sedan. Police reported the passenger on the dirt bike quickly hid the vehicle in an alley and returned to the scene with friends to assault the car’s driver. The driver of the sedan was injured to such a severe extent that he was rushed to Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
The passenger was arrested and faces assault charges.
The driver of the dirt bike was catapulted from the cycle after the crash. He suffered broken bones to his arm and wrist, according to police. He was also sent to Shock Trauma and will face charges surrounding motor vehicle infractions and driving an illegal dirt bike.
Non-street legal dirt bikes are a prevalent problem for Baltimore officers during the summer. Riders apparently travel in packs, threatening pedestrians and other drivers as they race through traffic. Police are forbidden to chase the vehicles due to safety issues.
A new law scheduled to take effect October 1, 2010 will make it illegal for gas station owners to sell gas to dirt bikes.
