Facebook finally has a competitor

The past year saw the social networking platform Facebook taking the internet world by storm. LinkedIn is now following its footsteps announcing a platform of its own. LinkedIn’s platform is expected to be very different and unique.

LinkedIn caters to the segment of business networkers with its platform called Intelligent Applications or InApps. According to the Vice President of platform products, LinkedIn Jamie Templeton, this platform works for not the average social networker but for the serious business professionals. LinkedIn is therefore expected to be less fun and more utilitarian and will be offered in beta at launch due to possible hitches.

Features of the site include WordPress’s sync applications, Box.net’s file collaboration application, Six Apart blog posts to the LinkedIn profile, reading list from the site Amazon.com, etc. The applications you add on your site can be viewed by other people as against the Facebook apps. Your profile will display the apps you opt for. LinkedInn requests developer’s features for free though paid versions are also offered. Ads include only the LinkedIn’s and other ad networks are not entertained.

Apps will be limited to dozens and not thousands as in the Facebook. According to LinkedIn’s Vice President of advertising and marketing, Patrick Crane, limited apps may limit the number of developers, but controlled approach is essential as they are looking to focus on exclusively professional business audience who are not too fond of too many apps.

LinkdIn gets a percentage of the money paid by members for upgrade to paid versions. Sites like Amazon.com offers them a percentage of the sales of books generated through the list posted through associate programs of Amazon.
